Development

I experimented with inking my fingerprints and creating a clean print using my index finger and thumb. I found it difficult to create a clean print and mixed black paint and ink which enabled a more defined print.

I created two different designs, one inspired by a pirate flag which for me, was more interesting and exciting to respond with.

Considering materials:

I considered dying an old white sheet to a brown-paper-like colour and using black ink to create a design like classic forensic fingerprints. However, considering the flag design was rather simple I wanted a fabric which was more interesting/textured.
Found translucent purple fabric which to me, communicated the complexities of identity. I find it interesting to consider identity and to me, identity is much more than physiognomic identification and one's likes and dislikes. Your identity shifts with people's views and relationships with you- the closer you are to someone the more you will reveal your true identity, but everyone will have a different view of you depending on where/when they met you. Some identities are filtered depending on who you are with- parents/colleagues/friends etc. I feel the translucency of the fabric, which changes in different environments/backgrounds embodies this.

Making and developing flag:

I printed out the skull and crossbones to trace over so I could accurately depict my fingerprint. I used white paint on the material which became slightly difficult as the material is very thin, the paint would bleed slightly and stick to the paper, leaving residue. There was not much I could do about this due to the nature of the material, but it enabled me to consider the accuracy of my painting as I had to paint very delicately so the paint wouldn't bleed.
